Study in Southampton

Southampton is a significant south English Harbour town with a population of 220.000 residents. It is about 130 kilometres southwest of London and can be easily reached by car, train and Bus. The London airports Heathrow and Gatwick offer many regular flight connections to important European cities. There are also smaller airports at Southampton and Bournemouth.

The University of Southampton was founded in 1862 and is one of the strongest research universities in Great Britain. It is part of the Russel Group, an elite group of 20 universities, which together receive two thirds of the public research funds in Great Britain.

The University of Southampton consists of eight faculties, with 17.000 Undergraduate and 7.000 Graduate students overall. It is rated among the top 1% of Universities in the world. The medical faculty was founded in 1971 and was the first medical faculty in Great Britain, which started the early student-patient contact beginning in the first year of study.

Study places at the University of Southampton are highly desired which can be seen from the high number of applicants where the Faculty of Medicine usually receives over 3000 applications for around 260 places each year. Because of the cooperation with Kassel, 24 additional study places are available each year that are exclusively for the BM(EU) programme.

The main teaching hospital in Southampton is the prestigious Southampton General Hospital which was founded in 1900. Southampton General Hospital is a publicly owned and run by University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trusts. The 7.500 employees of the Trust treat 115.000 inpatients and 350.000 outpatients each year in 1.100 beds.
